Register names with less than 5 characters

I saw that it is not possible to register names on the blockchain that are less than 5 characters at the moment. Is this temporary or will it always be like this? In the former case, when will this restriction be lifted off?

This is temporary, but we're still planning when and how that restriction will be lifted.
